Phoenix ties daily heat record as historic heat wave continues

PHOENIX — Phoenix tied a daily heat record on Sunday as a heat wave continues to warm up the Valley.

The temperature at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service uses for the city’s official readings, hit 92 degrees at 4:43 p.m.

The previous record temperature for March 15 was 92 degrees, which was set in 2013.

The city also broke a record on Friday that had stood since 2017, when temperatures peaked at 93 degrees.

The warm temperatures are expected to continue into next week due to a heat wave fueled by consecutive high-pressure systems.

In fact, the second high-pressure system could drive temperatures into the triple digits, which would be the earliest a 100-degree day has been recorded.

Near record highs through Monday will quickly get hotter during the middle of the week. Highs are likely to top 100° by Wednesday before peaking at or above 105° Thursday-Saturday. Daily records will easily be broken Wednesday-next Sunday. #azwx #cawx pic.twitter.com/ppLpcqNZMd

Sky Harbor has only reached 100 degrees once in March, which was on March 26, 1988.

Typically, the city doesn’t have its first 100-degree day until May 2.
