Phoenix school locked down for reported gun on campus

PHOENIX — Sunland STEAM Academy was placed on lockdown Wednesday morning after a student reported a weapon on campus.

The Phoenix Police Department was notified and the firearm has been removed from the school. According to the district, police suggested the lockdown so they could find and remove the weapon.

Two students were detained in connection with the incident, and no one was harmed.

The Roosevelt School District released a statement explaining parents could check their children out of school early if they wanted, and the district’s crisis team is available.

“We commend the student who made the report for their quick thinking and bravery, and we commend our staff and law enforcement for their prompt response,” the district said.

The school is located at Southern and Seventh avenues.
