Marriott hotel groundbreaking marks a development milestone near Mesa airport

PHOENIX — A large-scale development near Mesa Gateway Airport saw an early milestone as Marriott broke ground on a five-story hotel on Thursday.

The SpringHill Suites by Marriott location situated near the airport within upcoming development Gateway East will include 127 suites with the ability to accommodate flight passengers, visitors to the Arizona Athletic Grounds sports complex and its eventual business tenants.

SpringHill Suites is a branch of Marriott hotels that offers suites only with business and leisure travelers in mind.

This new location, the Valley’s seventh such Marriott location, will feature a lobby bar, outdoor pool and fitness center in addition to a complimentary hot breakfast and free Wi-Fi for guests.

“The need for high-quality hospitality offerings is at an all-time high,” Regina Antone, chairwoman of the Mesa Gateway Airport Authority (MGAA) Board of Directors, said in a press release. “This hotel will fill the need and demand from the surrounding community and supports our vision of a vibrant, globally competitive airport business park.”

The hotel’s groundbreaking comes after data center cooling manufacturer XNRGY became fully operational at Gateway East in late October.

Gateway East spans 270 acres near the airport, and construction will soon begin on roughly 17,000 square feet of retail and restaurant businesses.

“Mesa continues to attract investment because of the strength of our region’s demographics — a highly educated workforce, strong household incomes and continued growth in our communities,” Mesa Mayor and MGAA Vice Chairman Mark Freeman said. “Projects like this hotel, and the Gateway East master development, reflect the confidence in Mesa’s future and reinforces our position as one of the fastest growing and most competitive markets in the southwest.”

Gateway East developer The Boyer Company highlighted a $158,718 median household income in a 1-mile radius of the plot. It also noted nearly half of the residents in the area hold a college degree.

“This project builds directly on the incredible momentum generated by the success of XNRGY Climate Systems and our upcoming commercial retail phase,” said Matt Jensen, a partner with The Boyer Company. “We are creating a destination where world-class companies and their visitors have immediate access to high-quality lodging and services.

“Gateway East will continue to develop into a primary employment and commerce hub for the southeast Valley.”
