Investigation underway after woman allegedly neglected, abandoned 9 dogs in West Valley

PHOENIX – Authorities want to speak to a woman who is accused of neglecting nine dogs and abandoning them near Buckeye.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Animal Crimes Unit served a search warrant in the far West Valley near Salome Highway and Old US 80 on Wednesday morning after neighbors lodged complaints about Gina Steffes.

Steffes allegedly kept the dogs in filthy conditions without adequate food, water or shelter, according to MCSO.

She lived in a recreational vehicle where the warrant was served but moved the RV after hearing about the investigation, leaving the animals running loose or kenneled on the property, authorities said.

Detectives have been unable to contact Steffes.
