PHOENIX – There’s a decent chance for the first rain in Phoenix in over a month in the coming days, with the initial round due Friday.

“It will be dry in the Phoenix area through tomorrow morning,” Mark O’Malley of the National Weather Service (NWS) in Phoenix told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Thursday. “The rain chances start to increase tomorrow afternoon.”

O’Malley said there’s a 40% to 50% chance for light showers around the Valley on Friday before things clear out that night.

“I don’t expect much accumulation, maybe a 10th of an inch for someone who’s really lucky. Many areas will probably see nothing at all out of this,” he said.

Meanwhile, the weekend forecast calls for some clouds but dry conditions with above-normal high temperatures in the middle to upper 70s each day.

Will it rain in Phoenix next week?

“However, we’re looking at another storm system which will roll in here late Monday and primarily Monday night and Tuesday across the Phoenix metro. Looking for anywhere between a 50% and 70% chance of rain,” O’Malley said.

The second system is expected to be more productive in terms of rainfall, the meteorologist added.

“Could be a little bit more accumulation with this, maybe up to a quarter an inch of rain,” O’Malley said. “And then, if you’re heading up to the high country in northern Arizona, could be a little bit of snow up there.”

He also said a “few showers” could linger through the middle of next week.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the NWS uses for the city’s official records, hasn’t seen measurable rainfall since Jan. 8, although trace amounts fell on Jan. 22.
