Pedestrian dead after hit by vehicle while allegedly lying in roadway in Phoenix

PHOENIX — A man was hit and killed by a vehicle while allegedly lying in a roadway in Phoenix on Friday, authorities said.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers responded around 6:45 p.m. to the area of 23rd and Grand avenues for reports of a pedestrian who had been struck by a car.

The Phoenix Fire Department arrived at the scene to treat the unidentified man for his injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition and died there.

The driver of the vehicle did not remain at the scene.

Detectives said preliminary information indicates the man was lying in the roadway when he was hit by a dark-colored van heading eastbound on Grand Avenue.

No other information was provided about the ongoing investigation.
