Mesa apartment fire leaves 2 adults, 4 children hospitalized

PHOENIX — Six people, including four children, were hospitalized after a fire broke out at an eight-unit apartment building in Mesa early Saturday morning, authorities said.

According to the Mesa Fire Department, crews responded to the fire at the apartment building near Dobson and Baseline roads just before 2 a.m.

After Mesa police and the fire department arrived at the scene, they located two adults and four children suffering from serious burns.

All six individuals were taken to a local burn center. Fire officials said one of the children was first taken to Banner Desert Medical Center before being airlifted to the burn center.

Approximately 30 residents were evacuated from the apartment building and taken to a nearby middle school for support.

The fire was upgraded to a third-alarm response, meaning crews from Mesa, Tempe and Chandler all worked together to fight the fire.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.
