Police find, book suspect involved in south Phoenix shooting that left toddler in hospital

PHOENIX — Police identified and booked a suspect involved in a shooting in south Phoenix that left a toddler hospitalized on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers responded to the area of 32nd Street and Broadway Road for an unknown trouble call just after noon.

When police arrived at the scene, they found a toddler suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

The toddler was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

On Wednesday, it was determined that 29-year-old Joanna Chalup Cortez had shot the toddler and police said no other suspects are believed to be outstanding.

After police contacted Cortez, they arranged for a surrender and were able to book the suspect for charges that include aggravated assault and discharging a firearm at a residence.

The toddler is still being treated at the hospital as of around 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Sgt. Jen Zak told reporters during a Tuesday press conference there had been no arrests because the suspect fled the scene before police arrived.

Police initially believed the shooting was a domestic violence incident, but further investigation indicated that might not be the case.

The investigation remains ongoing.
