Arizona State Courts Building in Phoenix evacuated after package with explosive substances found

PHOENIX – The Arizona State Courts Building in Phoenix was evacuated Monday after explosives were detected in the mailroom.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) said it was notified around 8 a.m. that a suspicious package had been found at the Arizona State Courts Building, which houses the state Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, Division 1.

A joint investigation was then launched. Authorities found multiple vials in the package, two of which tested positive for a homemade explosive substance, according to DPS.

As of 3:30 p.m. Monday, the State Courts building remained closed due to additional sweeps that were still taking place. Once that process is complete, the package will be removed for additional investigation and disposal, DPS said.

The Arizona State Courts Building is located near the Capitol at 15th Avenue and Jefferson Street.

According to ABC15, the Arizona Supreme Court said regular business hours will resume on Tuesday.
