Injured hiker wheeled off Piestewa Peak in late-night rescue operation

PHOENIX – Crews wheeled an injured woman off Piestewa Peak in Phoenix during a late-night rescue operation Thursday, authorities said.

Technical rescue teams were deployed to the mountain near 24th Street and Lincoln Drive around 10:45 p.m., according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

They contacted the hiker about a quarter of a mile from the parking lot. She had a lower extremity injury and was unable to make it down on her own.

The rescuers used a big wheel operation to bring the woman off the mountain safely.

She was evaluated at the scene and chose not to be taken to a hospital.

The Piestewa Peak parking entrance closes at 7 p.m. but the trails are open until 11 p.m.
