1 detained, 1 seriously hurt after ‘suspicious vehicle’ flees from deputies, crashes in Glendale

PHOENIX — One person was detained and another was hospitalized after a car that had allegedly fled from Maricopa County deputies crashed into a pole in Glendale, authorities said.

The incident began just after midnight on Monday near Citrus Road and Glendale Avenue, west of Loop 303, when deputies saw a vehicle that they believed to be suspicious in front of several businesses, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).

After the deputies pulled up to the vehicle, it sped off and went east on Glendale Avenue before turning south on Loop 303, the sheriff’s office said.

The deputies then noticed the car had a fake license plate and tried to pull it over, but it did not stop. The driver proceeded to turn off the car’s headlights in an attempt to get rid of the deputies.

After that, the traffic stop was canceled. However, the vehicle was found several minutes later after it had crashed into a pole near El Mirage Road and Glendale Avenue, about 10 miles east of where the car was first seen.

The driver of the car, who has not been identified, was detained. A passenger in the car was hospitalized with serious injuries, according to MCSO.

No other details about the crash were released.
