3 horses showing signs of neglect seized from West Valley property

PHOENIX – Three horses showing signs of neglect, including two miniature horses, were seized from a West Valley property this week, authorities said.

A Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputy who was out on an unrelated call for service in Buckeye noticed a horse nearby that looked unhealthy and reported it to the Animal Crimes Unit.

Investigators followed up at the property near 187th Avenue and Broadway Road and talked to the owner about the horse’s condition.

Why did MCSO decide to seize three horses?

The owner said she didn’t know why the animal was so skinny. She also said it hadn’t seen a vet in four years, according to MCSO.

While there, the investigators saw two miniature horses that were having difficulty walking, prompting them to obtain a warrant to seize the animals.

Members of the MCSO Animal Crimes and MASH units took custody of the three horses on Tuesday.

MASH – Maricopa County Sheriff Office’s Animal Safe Haven – is a program that gives inmates a chance to help care for seized animals.

No arrests have been announced.
