Motorcyclist killed in 7-vehicle crash that disrupted Phoenix freeway traffic for hours

PHOENIX – Traffic on a Phoenix freeway was disrupted for several hours Tuesday after a motorcyclist was killed in a multivehicle collision, authorities said.

Seven vehicles were involved in the crash, which occurred on the westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway near 32nd Street around 8:45 a.m., according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

A motorcyclist wound up pinned under a commercial van. The person died after being extracted and taken to a hospital.

A woman from one of the vehicles was also hospitalized, but the severity of her injuries is unknown.

How did crash that killed motorcyclist affect traffic?

The 40th Street on-ramp was closed in the wake of the crash, as were multiple lanes on the mainline freeway.

The restriction became a full closure of westbound Loop 202 at 40th Street before 10:30 a.m., according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

At 12:20 p.m., ADOT announced that all lanes were open.
