PHOENIX — From a major crash after a father allowed his 13-year-old daughter to drive, to a new Walmart, here are some of the top Arizona news stories from Dec. 5-7.

Father arrested for allegedly allowing 13-year-old daughter to drive resulting in crash in Mesa

A father was arrested on Friday night after he allegedly allowed his young daughter to drive and she crashed into a building in Mesa, authorities said.

According to the Mesa Police Department, officers were dispatched at 9 p.m. after a vehicle drove off the roadway and into a building near Dobson and Baseline roads.

Photos of the crash shared by police identified the building as a My Arizona Lawyers office.

Police said that the driver of the car was identified as a 13-year-old girl and that the passenger was her father.

Neither of them were injured and no one was taken to the hospital.

40 Love, a restaurant and lounge with celebrity ties, opening soon in Scottsdale

A long-awaited upscale restaurant and lounge with a celebrity pedigree is set to debut in Old Town Scottsdale.

40 Love is scheduled to open Dec. 13, over a year after the original target date. Initial plans called for a spring 2024 launch, but the project experienced construction delays.

The venue, which is named after a tennis score, is located at 7117 E. Sixth Ave., between Stetson Drive and Scottsdale Road. Dinner reservations are now available.

40 Love partnership includes former Arizona Cardinals player

Sean Mulholland and Avery Johnson Jr., cofounders of the 40 Love Group, developed the Scottsdale restaurant in partnership with NFL star and one-time Arizona Cardinal DeAndre Hopkins and Irish singer/songwriter Niall Horan.

Phoenix shopping center Paradise Village Gateway sells for $28.5 million

Another Phoenix shopping mall has changed hands along Tatum Boulevard.

Paradise Village Gateway — off Shea and Tatum boulevards — was bought for $28.5 million by GC Tatum and Shea LP on Nov. 21, according to Tempe-based real estate database Vizzda LLC.

The open air shopping center was built in 1996 and spans nearly 18 acres and 217,000 square feet. It is home to Ross Dress for Less, PetSmart, The UPS Store and other food, retail and beauty businesses. It was previously owned by SCC Paradise Village Gateway AZ LLC, who was represented by Michael Owendoff of SITE Centers, a real estate investment trust that invests in shopping centers.

Gov. Hobbs order flags to half-staff for Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs ordered state government buildings to fly flags at half-staff on Sunday for Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

The order stated that flags are to be lowered from sunrise to sunset to honor and remember the 2,403 service members and civilians killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

Individuals, businesses and other organizations are encouraged to lower their flags to pay tribute as well.

The last USS Arizona survivor died in 2024, but there are an estimated 14 U.S. veterans across the United States who survived the Pearl Harbor attack and are still sharing their stories.

Walmart scoops up Glendale mega warehouse in record-setting deal

Walmart acquired a nearly 1.28 million square-foot building next to Luke Air Force Base for $152,161,730 in a record-setting deal that closed the day before Thanksgiving.

It’s the second-largest industrial building sold in Phoenix on record, according to data from CoStar Group/Homes.com.

Walmart will be the first tenant at the recently completed Luke Field complex, which is a 140-acre, 2.4 million square foot logistics park delivered in the West Valley by Lincoln Property Company. The retailer will occupy Building C at the project.
