Man sings opera while undergoing open brain surgery
Professional singer Ambrož Bajec-Lapajne recently uploaded a video of his awake brain surgery, during which he serenaded his doctors with beautiful opera.
Well, this isn’t something you see everyday.
Ambrož Bajec-Lapajne, a professional opera singer from Slovenia, recently posted a video of his awake craniotomy, a brain surgery he had done nearly a year ago after being diagnosed with Glioblastoma multiforme, a very aggressive malignant brain tumor.
But what made this awake craniotomy so unique, you may ask? Well, Bajec-Lapajne underwent the open brain surgery while singing opera.
Bajec-Lapajne explained that his neurosurgeon advised him to undergo the procedure awake, in order to avoid any negative effects it might have on his career. He performed two couplets of Schubert’s “Gute Nacht,” in order to see if he could recognize the key change, according to the video’s description.
The brain surgery, which was performed at the University Medical Center Utrecht on June 13, 2014, went smoothly and we are glad to announce that Bajec-Lapajne has been doing fine since and continues to make beautiful music.
