Services set for Tempe firefighter/paramedic who died of occupational cancer

The memorial services have been announced for a Tempe firefighter/paramedic who died of occupational cancer earlier this month.

PHOENIX — The memorial services have been announced for a Tempe firefighter/paramedic who died of occupational cancer earlier this month.

John Garza, 52, died on Nov. 7 and dedicated 20 years to the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department, helping thousands of people in life-threatening emergencies.

The full honors memorial services for Garza will take place on Thursday at Compass Christian Church, which is located at 1825 S. Alma School Road in Chandler.

Details on memorial services for Tempe firefighter/paramedic

A procession led by Tempe Police motorcycles and three Tempe first responder trucks is expected to arrive at the church around 9:45 a.m.

In addition, firefighters will line the entrance of the church as Garza is brought inside.

The service will begin after that and will feature remarks from Garza’s family members, close friends and Tempe Fire Medical Rescue leadership. A video tribute will also be shown before Garza is given traditional firefighter honors.

The service will be closed out with the Firefighter’s Prayer and a bell ceremony by the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Honor Guard.

Garza was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and served various roles within the Tempe Fire Department during his tenure, from captain to engineer.

He was also a longtime member of the Tempe community, having graduated from Tempe High School in 1990.

And? A lot of people die of cancer and don't get headlines... firefighters are overrated underachievers who couldn't do anything else in life... similar to college professors.
