Storm damage repair work on Arizona highway will create 120-mile detour

PHOENIX — Storm damage repair work on a section of State Route 288 will see a 120-mile detour take effect Wednesday and Thursday, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The detour will add approximately 2.5 hours for those traveling between SR 188 and Young, ADOT said.

The closures for the section about 12 miles north of the intersection with SR 188, between mileposts 271-276 and just north of Roosevelt Lakes, are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Why is State Route 288 closing?

After October storms, crews need to dig out a section of roadway at milepost 273.8 in order to replace a damaged culvert near the Billy Fire burn scar.

Drivers trying to get to the community of Young from SR 188 are advised to take SR 188 west to SR 87, then head north through Payson to SR 260 before traveling east until turning south onto Young Road at milepost 284.7

ADOT said the construction schedule is subject to change due to weather and other circumstances.
