Delays affecting Phoenix Sky Harbor after ground stop due to thunderstorms

PHOENIX — Delays affected flights into Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Sunday morning after a ground stop was issued due to thunderstorms.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, departures to Sky Harbor had an average delay of 78 minutes because of the storms. The delays were expected to last until around 2 p.m.

The flight-tracking website FlightAware showed more than 175 flights were delayed as of 8:45 a.m.

In addition to the delays, a ground stop was in place at Phoenix Sky Harbor until 9 a.m.

Stopped flights were from a variety of different cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, St. Louis, Houston and parts of New Mexico.

The airport, which the National Weather Service in Phoenix uses for the city’s official readings, had received 1.58 inches of rain before 9 a.m.

NWS showed weather activity moving northeast through the Valley around 7 a.m. and described the thunderstorms as having “very heavy” rainfall.
