Thunderstorms, rain continue in parts of Valley after overnight storms

PHOENIX — Thunderstorms and rain continued to affect parts of the Valley on Sunday morning after overnight storms blanketed the metro Phoenix area.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Phoenix showed weather activity moving northeast through the Valley and described the thunderstorms as having “very heavy” rainfall.

The weather authority issued a flash flood warning for Maricopa County until 12:30 p.m.

It also put out flood warnings for Scottsdale and Paradise Valley that were expected to expire around the same time.

There were flood warnings throughout the morning for specific parts of the Valley including Buckeye, Chandler, Anthem, Mesa, Tempe, Gilbert, Queen Creek and Chandler Heights.

NWS warned motorists to stay off of flooded roadways.

As of around 1 p.m., Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which NWS uses for the city’s official readings, had received 1.96 inches of rain, more than surpassing the previous daily rainfall record for Oct. 12, set in 1957, of 0.32 inches of rain.

A flood watch is in effect for the Phoenix area through Monday evening after NWS extended it from Sunday evening.
