Police seek public’s help with violent sexual assault case in Phoenix

PHOENIX – Authorities are asking the public for help solving the case of a violent sexual assault that took place in Phoenix last month.

The Phoenix Police Department held a press conference Friday to discuss the attack, which occurred in early-morning hours of Aug. 14, and urge anybody with information about the unsolved case to come forward.

Officers responded to the area of 46th and Oak streets, between McDowell and Thomas roads, around 4 a.m. after a caller reported hearing yelling from a nearby alley.

They followed a blood trail to locate the unconscious victim, who was partially unclothed and suffering from serious injuries.

The woman, who is in her mid-30s, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. She has since been released but is still recovering from her injuries.

“I can just say that in my time on the department and investigating these types of crimes, it was very … severe — there were severe injuries,” Lt. Casey Tornberg of the Phoenix Police Adult Sex Crimes Unit said during Friday’s press conference. “And … why we’re here today is due to those injuries, with the sexual assault.”

How public can help police solve violent sexual assault case

Anybody with information about the violent sexual assault case is asked to call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS (948-6377) or 480-TESTIGO (837-8446) for Spanish. Callers can remain anonymous, and tips that lead to an arrest could be eligible for a cash reward.

In addition, police created an online portal where video or photos related to the case can be submitted.

“We’re reaching out today for the community, anybody in the area, that might have some information, video, anything they heard or saw that was out of the ordinary … on the 13th … through the morning of the 14th,” Tornberg said.
