PHOENIX — With Arizona enjoying a zany summer when it comes to weather, shutterbugs are out in full force trying to capture some of the state’s dramatic summer storms.

However, the contest for best storm photo may be over. Tucson resident, real estate agent and photographer Greg McCown snapped an amazing shot of lightning intersecting a rainbow.

In a Facebook post, McCown said he was on the southeast side of town with two fellow stormchasers when the heavens opened up in the form of a microburst. McCown said, after traffic slowed to a craw on Interstate 10, he decided he wanted a photo of the rainbow without “telephone poles or other junk in the way.”

McCown readied his equipment and fired, just as a bolt of lightning came out of the sky.

“I saw this flash and said, ‘Hey. I wonder if I got that,’ ” McCown told KOLD-TV. “Having no idea what kind of strike it would be, when I pulled it off on the LCD screen in the desert, I was doing a happy dance.”

McCown’s photo has been shared tens of thousands of times on Facebook since he posted it Aug. 8.
