Bomb scare at Phoenix military facility turns out to be a false alarm

PHOENIX – A man who wanted to get rid of what he thought might be an explosive device caused a bomb scare Thursday afternoon in Phoenix, authorities said.

The man brought the device to the Papago Park Military Reservation near 56th Street and McDowell Road around 3:45 p.m., according to the Phoenix Police Department.

A police bomb squad was deployed to the Arizona National Guard facility, and the surrounding area was evacuated as a precaution.

How was bomb scare at Phoenix military facility resolved?

Authorities determined the man didn’t pose a threat, so there is no criminal investigation.

It turns out, the man drove to the facility with the device because he thought it was a military explosive and wanted to turn it over. He later told 12News he received the item as a gift from his brother and he was concerned it might be dangerous.

Personnel from Luke Air Force Base in Glendale were called in to take possession of the device.
