PHOENIX — Valley drivers should be aware of an upcoming two-week-long closure that will affect traffic on the Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway and Interstate 17.

The ramps between eastbound Loop 101 and I-17 will be closed from 12:30 a.m. Friday through 5 a.m. on Aug 29, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

ADOT advises drivers to prepare to use detours during the ramp closures. For instance, they can exit eastbound Loop 101 at 35th Avenue and travel north to eastbound Deer Valley Road to access northbound I-17.

Another option for motorists is to travel south on 35th Avenue to eastbound Union Hills Drive to reach southbound I-17, ADOT said.

Heading toward downtown Phoenix? ADOT recommends the following freeway detour routes: Eastbound Loop 101 to southbound State Route 51, or southbound Loop 101 in the West Valley to eastbound I-10.

Reason for closure of Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway ramps to I-17

The purpose of the closure is to replace a section of older, worn concrete pavement along an approach section for the ramps, ADOT said.

These repairs are within the work zone for the ongoing project to widen Loop 101 between I-17 and 75th Avenue.

The Loop 101 widening project began in September 2024 with the purpose of adding lanes in each direction as well as interchange and cross-street improvements at 75th Avenue. It is expected to be completed by 2027.
