4-year-old boy dies after drowning incident during private event at East Valley municipal pool

PHOENIX – A 4-year-old boy died Sunday night after a drowning incident during a private event at a Chandler municipal pool, authorities said.

Hamilton Aquatic Center lifeguards pulled the child from the water after an undetermined amount of time and initiated CPR, according to the Chandler Police Department.

First responders arrived on the scene near Arizona Avenue near Ocotillo Road around 8 p.m. and took over lifesaving measures.

The patient was then rushed to Chandler Regional Hospital, where he later died, police said.

Why was Chandler pool operating at time of drowning incident?

Hamilton Aquatic Center usually closes at 6 p.m. on Sundays this time of year, according to hours posted on the city’s website. However, about 60 people were attending a later private event at the time of the drowning incident, police said.

No other details were made available. The case remains under investigation.

According to tracking by Children’s Safety Zone, this was the second fatal child drowning in Maricopa or Pinal county this year.
