Family with children rescued after hiking on closed South Mountain trail

PHOENIX — A family of 11 hikers were rescued off a closed South Mountain hiking trail after experiencing heat exhaustion Sunday afternoon.

At 10 a.m., a family of five adults and six children began their hike on the Holbert Trail, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

Right before noon, several of the children in the group complained about the heat and were unable to complete the hike, fire officials said.

The National Weather Service showed temperatures reached 107 degrees right before noon.

A rescue team brought down two children, who were nine and 11 years old in a carrier, fire officials said.

Firefighters helped the rest of the family off the mountain.

Valley temperatures were forecasted to reach as high as 111 degrees.

No one in the party was injured and the family refused to be taken to a hospital.

Holbert Trail had signs posted that it was closed for hiking Sunday due to an Extreme Heat Warning.
