An Arizona woman was sentenced to 118 months in prison for assaulting a 3-year-old child in 2022, officials announced Thursday.

PHOENIX — An Arizona woman was sentenced to 118 months in prison for assaulting a 3-year-old child in 2022, officials announced Thursday.
Mohave Valley resident Starla Shaffer, 36, also received three years of supervised release for assault resulting in serious bodily injury, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.

Officials said Shaffer had assaulted and “caused permanent and life-threatening injuries” to the child between Jan. 1 and Sept. 21, 2022.
Shaffer and the unidentified toddler both belong to the Fort Mojave Indian Tribe.
U.S. District Judge Diane J. Humetewa declared the sentencing and Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona Christiana J. Reid-Moore conducted the prosecution.
The Fort Mojave Police Department and the FBI Phoenix Division’s Lake Havasu office collaborated to investigate the case.
