1 driver killed, 1 critically injured in wrong-way crash on Loop 202 in Mesa

PHOENIX — One person is dead and another is in critical condition in the aftermath of a wrong-way crash on an East Valley freeway early Monday, authorities said.

The wrong-way driver was killed in the collision, which occurred on the westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway near Stapley Road in Mesa just before 1 a.m., according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The other driver was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, DPS said.

The investigation into the cause of the wrong-way crash is ongoing. Authorities said impairment has not been ruled out as a contributing factor.

Fatal wrong-way crash caused lengthy freeway closure

Westbound Loop 202 was closed from Gilbert Road to Country Club Drive for several hours after the crash. The closure was lifted around 6:30 a.m.
