Suspect in custody after fatal shooting at central Phoenix strip mall

PHOENIX – A suspect was arrested after a fatal shooting Thursday afternoon at a central Phoenix strip mall, authorities said.

Officers responded to the northwest corner of 16th Street and Glendale Avenue around 1 p.m., according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Police later identified Jason Powers, 44, as the victim.

Powers was found suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses provided police with a suspect description.

How did police find suspect in fatal shooting at Phoenix strip mall?

“A search for this suspect took place, resulting in the apprehension of an adult male identified as 25-year-old Aleksander Hornik,” Sgt. Robert Scherer said in a media advisory Friday.

Detectives established probable cause to book Hornik into jail on counts of first-degree murder and aggravated assault.

Crime scene tape could be seen surrounding the strip mall, which is anchored by a Walgreens, while the area was under investigation.
