Worker rescued after getting trapped in trench at Phoenix construction site

PHOENIX – A worker was rescued Thursday after getting trapped in a trench at a northeast Phoenix construction site, authorities said.

The man was working near 64th Street and Mayo Boulevard around 10:30 a.m. when his safe box slid, partially trapping him, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

A safe box is a barrier designed to prevent a trench from collapsing on a worker.

Heavy equipment operators and firefighters moved the safe box to make it safe to extricate the man.

Rescue workers were able to access the patient and start treatment before crews pulled him out using a worksite excavator and rope methods.

The man was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
