Judge blocks disputed AmeriCorps grant funding cuts in Arizona, 23 other states

PHOENIX — A federal judge issued a favorable ruling Thursday to Arizona and other states that sued the Trump administration over AmeriCorps grant funding cuts.
U.S. District Judge Deborah L. Boardman granted a preliminary injunction to block the agency’s cancellation of grants and early discharge of corps members for the 24 states involved in the lawsuit.
AmeriCorps is an independent federal agency that awards grants to help organizations meet community needs across the U.S.
“This court order is a victory for Arizonans and for every community that relies on AmeriCorps members to fill vital service gaps,” Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said in a press release.
What prompted states to file AmeriCorps lawsuit
The federal complaint was filed in the District of Maryland in April. It accused President Donald Trump’s cost-cutting efforts through the Department of Government Efficiency of reneging on grants funded through the AmeriCorps State and National program, which was budgeted $557 million in congressionally approved funding this year.
“AmeriCorps represents the best of public service in this country — from tutoring students in rural and low-income communities to helping seniors stay in their homes,” Mayes, a Democrat, said. “The Trump administration’s reckless attempt to dismantle it was not just wrong, it was unlawful.”
The lawsuit was filed along with officials in Maryland, Delaware, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Washington, DC, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington and Wisconsin.
Arizona is part of 18 multistate lawsuits seeking to block Trump administration actions.
