Power outage brings Grand Canyon North Rim visitor services to a standstill

PHOENIX – The cause of a power outage that brought Grand Canyon North Rim visitor services to a standstill has been identified, officials announced Wednesday.

The outage, which started Sunday night, is the result of an equipment failure involving a transformer, according to the National Park Service.

Grand Canyon Lodge started canceling overnight reservations on Monday. The lodge’s dining and retail operations will be closed at least through the weekend.

Grand Canyon Lodge, the only hotel on the North Rim within the national park, is working with customers to rebook stays.

What is open at Grand Canyon North Rim?

Crews have been working around heavy rain and lightning storms to restore power to the area.

The General Store is operating on a cash-only basis, but it has an ATM available.

The gas station is fully operational, and the following amenities remain open: North Rim Campground and its laundry and shower facilities, Backcountry Information Kiosk, Ranger Roost info desk, scenic viewpoints and the North Kaibab Trail.

Officials said the Grand Canyon Conservancy Store is expected to remain open, and all evening programs are temporarily moving to the North Rim Campground.

The North Rim opened for the 2025 season on May 15. The last day for most of the seasonal services will be Oct. 15.
