Police investigating nighttime shooting that left one dead in Peoria

PHOENIX — Police are investigating a shooting that left a man dead on Tuesday night in Peoria, authorities said.

Mario Franco, a 46-year-old from El Mirage, died after being shot outside of a business near 9600 W. Peoria Ave., according to a Wednesday release from the Peoria Police Department.

Initially, officers were responding to a request for assistance from an employee who had asked Franco multiple times to leave the premises due to how intoxicated he was.

However, it was determined through a preliminary investigation that before police arrived Franco left the business and retrieved a handgun from his vehicle. He then reportedly fired multiple shots into the air as well as into the establishment.

Following that, officers received another 911 call about a victim being shot in the thigh.

Franco then allegedly pointed his gun toward two males who witnessed his actions and exchanged gunfire with them. During the interchange Franco was allegedly hit in the chest, and the other two were uninjured.

When police arrived on the scene they found the two men with their handguns pointed at Franco, who was in the passenger seat of his black 2020 BMW 330I. The two men complied with officers who disarmed and detained them.

Officers then proceeded to give aid to Franco.

Peoria Fire-Medical arrived on scene and performed lifesaving measures on Franco but were unsuccessful and he died on the scene.

The victim that was shot in the leg was transported to a local hospital where they were treated and then released.

Authorities said that this appears to have been an isolated incident.

Peoria Police Department is still investigating and no arrests have been made at this time.
