Gov. Hobbs declares state of emergency over Greer Fire in eastern Arizona

PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs declared a state of emergency for the Greer Fire on Saturday, making additional state resources available to firefighting efforts.

The Greer Fire has grown to 15,985 acres, as of Saturday morning, after it started on Tuesday. Many residents in the southern part of Apache County face evacuation orders as a result.

“The Greer Fire has burned thousands of acres of land, destroyed multiple structures and forced families to leave their homes. My heart is with all of those impacted,” Hobbs said in a statement.

“I am grateful to the firefighters and first responders who are working around the clock to keep communities safe, and I will do everything in my power to help them fight this terrible fire,” she continued.

What resources did Gov. Hobbs make available in declaring state of emergency?

Funds totaling $200,000 will be provided from the Governor’s Emergency Fund to the Arizona Division of Emergency Management.

Additionally, the division will have access to the Arizona Emergency Response and Recovery Plan, which helps coordinate assets.

Documentation for the state of emergency noted a Fire Management Assistance Grant had also been permitted on Wednesday.

Hobbs visited the area along with the division’s director, Gabe Lavine, and other officials on Saturday.
