Woman dies after colliding with stolen vehicle traveling wrong way in Phoenix

PHOENIX — A two-car collision involving a stolen vehicle left one woman dead and two other injured on Wednesday, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Maria Ramos Camacho, 58, died at a hospital from injuries sustained during a two-vehicle crash near 16th and Jefferson streets shortly before 9 p.m., police said.

Officers who responded to the scene of the crash found Camacho and two other women injured in a vehicle. The three were hospitalized but Camacho died while receiving treatment.

Police said the other vehicle had been reported stolen.

Its driver, 24-year-old Isaiah Sparks, fled the scene before police arrived, but he was apprehended later, police said.

How did the Phoenix collision involving a stolen vehicle occur?

Before the crash, Sparks drove the stolen vehicle westbound on Jefferson Street, which is a one-way street that only runs eastbound, police said.

When Sparks approached the vehicle Camacho and the two other women were driving in, he was unable to control the vehicle and the vehicles collided, police said.

No other information was available.

The investigation is ongoing.
