Public invited to celebrate completion of Grand Canalscape Phase 3 in west Phoenix

PHOENIX – The public is invited to celebrate the completion of Phase 3 of the Grand Canalscape improvement project in west Phoenix this weekend.

The project transformed the dirt path along the Grand Canal between 47th and 75th avenues into an ADA-accessible concrete trail with lighting and landscaping.

Other upgrades include signalized crosswalks at street crossings, seating areas, gym equipment, public art and trash and pet waste receptacles.

During the previous phases of the Grand Canalscape, similar improvements were made over a 12-mile stretch between Interstate 17 and the Phoenix-Tempe border near 56th Street.

When/where is the Grand Canalscape celebration?

Mayor Kate Gallego, Councilwoman Betty Guardado and other city officials are scheduled to join representatives from Salt River Project and Hunter Contracting Co. on Saturday morning for the Phase 3 unveiling.

The celebration is set to begin at 10 a.m. with a community walk starting at Maryvale High School on 59th Avenue, just south of the canal. Free parking will be available at the school.

The walk will end near 63rd and Clarendon avenues, where a ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 10:20 a.m.

The event, which runs until noon, will also include city department activity booths, facepainting, yard games, food vendors and entertainment.
