ASU announces downtown Phoenix location of future medical school

Arizona State University announced on Monday the location of where its future state-of-the-art medical school will be built.

PHOENIX — Arizona State University announced Monday where its future state-of-the-art medical school will be built.

The school will be part of the ASU Health downtown Phoenix campus near Fifth and Fillmore streets.

ASU President Michael Crow made the announcement at the site with Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, ASU Health Vice President Sherrine Gabriel and HonorHealth CEO Todd LaPorte.

HonorHealth, a nonprofit health care system, is in partnership with the project. The group contributed funding and will serve as the primary clinical affiliate for the new school.

“We’re not just building a public health school. We’re not just doing a few new things under some label. We’re trying to take the assets of the most innovative university that the United States has had and apply it to a new class of problems,” Crow said in a release.

Why does Arizona State University see the need for a medical school?

Plans for the new ASU School of Medicine were announced in June 2023.

The campus will train physicians to combine medicine, engineering, technology and humanities, according to ASU. Future students will learn how to integrate artificial intelligence, data science and innovative techniques.

A $12 million Phoenix city bond will go toward the school to fund current clinical research between ASU and Mayo Clinic.

“Phoenix has long been a hub for innovation, and now, with ASU Health, we bring together the brightest minds in medicine combined with the best technology to push the boundaries of what’s possible,” Gallego said.

“More importantly, at the heart is the patient. ASU Health will train the next generation of doctors, nurses and researchers who will transform healthcare. Families here in Phoenix and beyond will benefit from earlier diagnoses, better treatments and more accessible care.”
