Valley forecast for Valentine’s Day calls for more rain, but not much

PHOENIX — After light showers dotted the Phoenix area on Thursday, more rain, but not much, is in the forecast for Valentine’s Day.

“Our best chances today are going to be basically … through about mid-morning,” Alex Young, lead meteorologist with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Phoenix, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Friday morning. “And then, it looks like our chances are going to kind of taper off across the Phoenix metro going into the late afternoon and early evening hours.”

Young said projections call for a tenth of an inch or less, with the northern part of the Valley and higher terrains getting the most action, until the system fully fades.

In addition, winds will pick up as the day progresses, with gusts up to 20-30 mph expected Friday afternoon.

“Things will clear out tonight, and then we’ll have pleasant weather conditions over the weekend,” Young said. “It looks like we’ll be seeing some highs in the lower 70s Saturday and then we’ll be warming into the middle 70s on Sunday.”

Only a few parts of metro Phoenix received measurable rain on Thursday, although trace amounts fell elsewhere.

“The accumulations were light for the most part, only a couple of a hundredths of an inch across some areas,” Young said.

Rain has been scarce in recent months

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the NWS uses for the city’s official readings, didn’t get any rain Thursday. The airport has received measurable rainfall only one time since Aug. 22.

Phoenix usually gets about 3 inches of rain from October to mid-February, Young said. During the 2024-25 cycle, the city received only 0.01 inches during that span.

“Maybe we’ll get that amount or a little bit more today, but it’s not going to help very much,” Young said.
