3 dead in wrong-way crash on State Route 87 in Fountain Hills

PHOENIX – Three people died in a wrong-way crash on State Route 87 in Fountain Hills, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Two vehicles were involved in the crash at milepost 187 near Shea Boulevard, authorities said. The collision occurred around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday. The northbound lanes were closed.

Officials say that one vehicle involved was going southbound in the northbound lanes. The three people who died were passengers in the other vehicle travelling northbound.

Drivers of both vehicles survived the crash, according to authorities.

It’s unclear if the driver of the wrong-way vehicle will face charges. None of the victims have been identified yet. Impairment has not been ruled out as a factor in the crash, officials said.

The northbound lanes of State Route 87 in Fountain Hills reopened around 1:57 p.m. according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
