PHOENIX – A man who allegedly shot at police Tuesday morning is in the hospital after getting hit by return fire, authorities said.

Officers received a call that said a man was holding a woman at gunpoint at an apartment complex in the area of 19th Avenue and Berridge Lane, north of Bethany Home Road, around 6:30 a.m., the Phoenix Police Department said.

Officers who arrived to the scene surrounded the apartment and called out commands, during which a man inside the apartment shot at officers from the backyard window, police said.

A Phoenix PD officer returned fire and the suspect then allegedly jumped over a fence into an alley. Despite commands to stop, he tried to run away, at which point an officer shot him, police said.

Officers gave him medical care until the Phoenix Fire Department arrived and drove him to the hospital, police said.

The suspect suffered non-life-threatening injuries and will be booked into jail once he’s released, police said.

Multiple roads remained closed in the area while the incident was under investigation.
