PHOENIX – The head of the Border Patrol agents’ union said President Joe Biden’s new immigration rules will have no affect on the crisis at the United States-Mexico boundary.

“[It] will do nothing in the long run,” Brandon Judd, of the National Border Patrol Council, told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Arizona’s Morning News on Friday.

“I’m just very skeptical. I just don’t think this administration has been honest with the American people,” he said.

Biden announced Thursday the U.S. would immediately begin turning away Cubans, Haitians and Nicaraguans who cross the border from Mexico illegally.

The new rules expand on an existing effort to stop Venezuelans attempting to enter the U.S., which began in October.

The U.S. will accept 30,000 people per month from the four nations for two years and offer the ability to work legally, as long as they come legally, have eligible sponsors and pass vetting and background checks.

“We already know what works,” Judd said. “… The migrant protection protocols or ‘Remain in Mexico’ proved that.”

A federal judge stopped the Biden administration’s bid to end ‘Remain in Mexico’ three weeks ago. The policy required asylum-seekers to wait in Mexico for hearings in U.S. immigration court.

Biden is scheduled to make his first visit as president to the southern border in El Paso, Texas, on Sunday.
