Victim’s doorbell camera helps Surprise police identify arson suspect

PHOENIX — A suspect was arrested Thursday in connection with an arson in Surprise after the victim’s doorbell camera helped police identify him, authorities said.

Justin Winjum was booked into Maricopa County Jail on counts of arson of an occupied structure and criminal damage, both felonies, according to the Surprise Police Department.

On Dec. 23, officers responded to an arson report at a home near Greenway Road and Bullard Avenue.

Video from the home’s doorbell camera showed a man using an unidentified flammable accelerant to light the front door.

Police received dozens of tips from the community after posting images of the suspect on social media.

Investigators used the tips and other evidence to identify Winjum.

The motive is still unknown, and the investigation is ongoing.
