Arizona state Rep. Lorenzo Sierra diagnosed with prostate cancer

PHOENIX — Arizona state Rep. Lorenzo Sierra announced Thursday that he has prostate cancer, and his prognosis is “excellent.”

“Because of regular screening, my diagnosis was made early, offering several options for treatment,” the West Valley Democrat said in a statement.

“In 2023, I will undergo treatment at Cancer Treatment Centers of America. The prognosis for most people in my situation is excellent.”

Sierra encouraged others to get regular screenings.

“Early detection is key to positive outcomes. Research shows that routine cancer screenings are lower among people of color,” he said.

“In choosing to be public about my diagnosis and treatment, I hope to raise awareness and action among communities of color about the importance of routine medical care.”

Sierra has represented District 19 in the state House since 2019, but he didn’t make it through the Democratic primary this year. His term comes to an end next week.

“I finish my last term in the House of Representatives with optimism and hope,” he said.

“I’m told my treatment should not interfere with my work as the new vice president of growth strategies for Terros Health.”

The cancer diagnosis is the second major health issue for Sierra since he’s been in office.

He survived a severe case of COVID-19 that led to him being put on a ventilator in October 2020.

“COVID couldn’t beat me and neither will this,” he said.
