PHOENIX — The holiday season is officially underway in Glendale with the city set to light its downtown area starting Monday evening ahead of various festivities.

Returning to illuminate downtown and Murphy Park, the Glendale Glitters light display will turn on for the first time at 6 p.m., the city said in a press release.

The six-week celebration is slated to run daily through Jan. 7.

Other celebrations set to follow in downtown Glendale include the annual Hometown Christmas Parade, performances at the Murphy Park Amphitheatre and the movies by moonlight series.

“This year marks the 29th anniversary of Glendale Glitters and the entire experience is truly magical,” Glendale Vice Mayor Jamie Aldama said in the release.

“This annual gathering provides such a great opportunity for families to come together and kick off their holiday season.”

There’ll also be a pair of “Light the World Giving Machines” that will allow visitors to donate to local and global charities.

The vending machines will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. starting Nov. 22 through Jan. 7.

“The city’s public affairs team has worked with the mayor’s office and various departments across the city on making this dream become a reality,” Heidi Barriga, Glendale special events coordinator, said in the release.

Other electric festivities are planned near the area throughout December.

The Sacred G’s, a group of professional dancers dressed in LED lights from head to toe, will perform the first three Fridays of December at Murphy Park.

Visitors will also get the chance to see the Hometown Christmas Parade scheduled to light the town Dec. 10.
