2 Phoenix City Council seats could head into a runoff election

PHOENIX — While votes were still being counted Wednesday, it appeared two Phoenix City Council seats could be headed for a runoff election next year.

City of Phoenix voters were asked to cast their ballot for potential council members in Districts 2, 4, 6 and 8.

But as ballots trickled in by 2 a.m., there were no candidates in District 6 and District 8 that met the required 50% vote. Should no candidates meet the requirement, a runoff on March 14 would be necessary.

With eight candidates seeking to succeed term-limited Sal DiCiccio in District 6, Kevin Robinson led with 8,846 votes — 20% of the total votes — while Sam Stone (17%), Joan Greene (17%) and Moses Sanchez (16%) battled for the second runoff position.

District 8 saw four candidates on the ballot, with two candidates, incumbent Carlos Garcia and Kesha Washington, neck and neck at 39%-38%. The other two candidates, Denise Viner and Nick Griemsmann, received just 12% and 11% of the vote.

The two other seats on this year’s ballot had incumbent candidates above the 50% threshold, with Jim Waring at 52% in District 2 and Laura Pastor running unopposed District 4.
