Police arrest man accused of pointing gun at Buckeye parkgoers

PHOENIX – Police in Buckeye arrested a man accused of pointing a gun at people in a park who objected to his dogs being off leash Thursday afternoon.

Terry Wellington, 23, was booked into Maricopa County Jail on two counts of aggravated assault.

He was taken into custody after an employee at Sundance Park called the Buckeye Police Department around 12:45 p.m. to report park visitors said Wellington drove up to them, aimed a gun out the window in their direction, then left.

Police said the park worker spoke to Wellington and another man, whose dog also was off its leash at the park near Rainbow and Lower Buckeye roads.

Afterward, the two men loaded the dogs into a tan van and then drove over to the people who had talked to the park worker and menaced them with a handgun.

A little while later, officers spotted a van matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle near Maricopa County Road 85 and Shepards Trail.

After conducting a traffic stop, police said they found a gun inside the van.
