More than 40,000 Valley residents see outages while dust storm passes

PHOENIX — More than 40,000 residents experienced power outages Monday afternoon while a dust storm passed through the Valley.

Over 32,000 SRP residents were without power, while more than 8,000 APS customers saw outages as of 4:30 p.m., according to the power utility companies.

A dust storm entering the northern part of the Valley was blowing across Phoenix Monday afternoon, ahead of expected evening thunderstorms and rain.

Shortly after dust blew through the Valley, rain gauges near Lake Pleasant recorded more than three-quarters of an inch of rain, according to the Flood Control District of Maricopa County.

Chances for rain in the Valley were at 30% before 5 p.m., before dipping down to 10% before 7 p.m.

A flash flood warning was also issued for Maricopa from 4:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., NWS said.

Winds across the Valley were forecast to reach speeds of up to 55 mph until just before 5 p.m., weather officials said.
