PHOENIX — A teenage boy was killed and five others were hospitalized following a crash Thursday night in Phoenix, authorities said.

The 13-year-old died after being ejected from a dark-colored SUV that authorities said lost control, and struck a white SUV around 9 p.m. near Interstate 17 and Union Hills Drive.

Three other passengers in the dark SUV sustained life-threatening injuries, two of which were ejected from the vehicle, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The driver and passenger of the white SUV sustained life-threatening injuries, with the passenger ejected as a result of the collision.

A pediatric male, a female in her 20s and a female in her 30s were transported to a hospital in extremely critical condition, the Phoenix Fire Department said.

A pediatric female and a man in his 30s were transported in critical condition, authorities said.

Southbound I-17 from Loop 101 to Bell Road closed around 9 p.m. and reopened shortly after 4 a.m.

Traffic was being diverted to Loop 101, as on-ramps to I-17 were closed.

The scene was turned over to the Department of Public Safety.
