Monday morning storms kick off week of possible Valley monsoon activity

PHOENIX — It could be a busy week in the Valley for monsoon weather as storm chances are in the forecast through Sunday.

The National Weather Service forecast showed a 20-40% chance for rain and thunderstorms each day of the week.

The West Valley south of Interstate 10 got pelted Monday morning, with more than three-quarters of an inch measured in areas of Goodyear.

A flash flood warning, meaning flooding is imminent or ongoing, was issued Monday morning for parts of the West Valley, initially through 10:15 a.m. and then extended until 12:15 p.m. Avondale, Goodyear, Buckeye, Estrella Mountain Ranch, Estrella Mountain Park and Rainbow Valley were covered by the warning.

A flash flood watch, meaning flooding is possible, is in effect across the Phoenix area and beyond through Wednesday at 5 a.m.

The storms are expected to bring down temperatures, with forecast highs staying below 100 degrees through Thursday.

Weather in the Valley over the past week has been a rollercoaster, as strong storms gave way to two days of excessive heat warnings last week where the mercury went past 110 degrees.
