1 dead after shootout involving court constable in Phoenix

PHOENIX – One person is dead after a shootout in Phoenix involving a court constable on Tuesday, authorities said.

The constable was serving court documents at a residence near 46th Street and Thomas Road when the incident occurred, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

The constable encountered gunfire while serving the documents and shot back, MCSO said.

One resident, whose identity wasn’t released, was found dead afterward. MCSO said the cause of death was not determined.

The presiding constable asked MCSO to lead the investigation into the incident, MCSO said.

Constables represent the court system and are not part of MCSO. Their duties include service of orders of protection, summonses, subpoenas and writs of the court for evictions and property seizures.
