PHOENIX — Two Mesa police officers were involved in a shooting Friday night at 8100 E University but did not suffer any injuries, according to authorities.

Around 9:30 p.m., police were working on a violent crime suppression project that had two officers driving a marked police car, according to a press release.

Police conducted a civil traffic stop on a male, 54, and the male did not want to stop.

While speaking with police, the male discharged a firearm and the officers returned fire, according to the release.

The suspect was treated at the scene by Mesa Fire and was transported to a local hospital. Their injuries are expected to be non-life threatening and police found a firearm next to the suspect.

Following the shooting, additional officers arrived to the scene and an Immediate Action Team was set up to take the suspect into custody, authorities said.

Detectives then took over the investigation, which remains ongoing.
